Sustainable development enables advancement of the quality of life of people living today, while preserving the environment to enable future generations to have the same aspirations. In a world confronting natural resource depletion, environmental pressures and climate change impacts, communities that adopt strategies embracing the principles of sustainable development are more likely to become successful global competitors.

Curtin University of Technology has established the Australian Sustainable Development Institute (ASDI) for the purpose of advancing the economic and social welfare of the state, the nation and the world without compromising the quality of the environment for current and future generations. 

ASDI has a unique mix of themes and priorities not found in other Australian environment and sustainable development institutes. ASDI combines the capacities of diverse research and teaching groups and disciplines in the four Faculties ranging across energy policy, efficiency and technology; climate change adaptation and coastal development, water management, sustainable resources, regional development, Indigenous futures and community engagement, Asia partnerships, urban development and sustainable cities, information and infrastructure security and sustainable food.

The uniqueness of ASDI is underlined by its base in Western Australia because it is home to some of the most unusual biodiversity on earth and its extraordinary richness as a resource base.

Sustainable development is now a core concern of all governments. ASDI responds to, and reflects the priorities of the Australian and Western Australian governments as they relate to the broad themes of sustainable development.
